Business Travel Tips For Less Stress On The Road

By Jeff Slutsky                    Monday March 19, 2001

Travel can create a lot of stress when doing business.  By learning some tips to limit stress from travel, you'll be able to successfully focus more on your business.  Ellen Kaye, President of Perfect Presentation\ in Scottsdale, Arizona coaches executives in the areas of presentations, communications, image and etiquette.  She offers these stress reducing tips to business travelers:

Have Plenty Of Tip Money Handy.  Before you go on a business trip, get enough small bills ($1 and $5) for tips.  Keep those bills in an easy to get place but not where you keep the rest of your money or credit cards. You'll need tip money for Skycaps, bellmen, porters, doormen and so on.  These people are there to make your travel easier so use them and tip them accordingly.

Use A Limo Service.  In many cities the cost of using a limo service (sedan, not stretch) is not that much more than a taxi but well worth it, according to Ellen.  You can prearrange to have the driver meet you and help you with your luggage.  The sedans are more comfortable and generally cleaner than a taxi or shuttle and you won't have to wait in line to get one.  It can be prepaid with a credit card so no need to fumble around with money.

Calls From Your Hotel Room.  Every time you make a local call or access an 800 number from your hotel room you could pay between 50¢ and $1.00 for each call.  With the cost of cell and digital service coming down along with

roaming and long distance charges, you may want to use your portable phone for all outbound calls.  But, use the hotel phone for inbound calls.  Long distance charges from a hotel room phone can be outrageous.  Consider getting a calling card which you can access with an 800 number.  Make as many long distance calls as you need to at one time.  Between calls you can hit a special key and dial a new number, but only pay one access charge.

Pack You Own Mini Drug Store.  Nothing can create stress more than coming down with something the night before a big meeting.  Be prepared for the usual kinds of maladies.  Pack three or four dosages of over the counter remedies for:  diarrhea, constipation, cold, flu, headache, muscle ache, stomach cramps and nausea.  This will keep you from having to find an all night drug store, in a strange city, at three in the morning.  Also, prevent many of these problems by getting a flu shot and washing your hands often with soap for at least 15 seconds.

Canceled Flight.  This is the ultimate stress generator.  As soon as the cancellation is announced, don't line up at the service desk with everyone else.  Rather, pull out your portable phone or go to the nearest pay phone to call the airline reservations and get your seat reserved.  Also, carry a copy of a monthly flight directly like OEM or American Express Skyguide so you can see your options.  Plus, avoid taking the last flight out.  Leave yourself a back up flight, just in case.
