Successful Speech Needs Vision, Careful Preparation

By Jeff Slutsky Tuesday, March 20, 2001

One form of persuasive communication is writing a speech, said Ellen A. Kaye of Perfect Presentation in Scottsdale, Arizona. To write an effective speech, Kaye suggests you follow these steps:

The vision. You first must have a clear objective for this speech. Ask yourself, what is the desired outcome or result from presenting this speech?

Topic-specific research. You can find information to support your presentation in a variety of places including Web sites, trade journals, newspapers, books, quotes, surveys and reports, government or association statistics, and so on. If your company or organization has conducted any kind of research, you'll want to consider incorporating some of that information into your speech if it helps you make your point.

Text Box: BizSmart Action Plan

To write a powerful speech:
•	Create a clear vision of the result of your speech.
•	When giving an objective to your audience, include a deadline.
•	Conduct research specific to your topic.
•	To have an impact, use quotes, anecdotes and relevant statistics.
•	Use telephone interviews to learn about your audience.
•	Give your audience a call to action.

Audience-specific research. It is critical to fully understand the needs of your audience. This helps you gear your presentation in substance and style to the group you wish to influence. One way to accomplish this is through telephone interviews. Ask your event planner to give you a list of up to 12 audience members. You want people who will be a good representation of the whole audience.

Topics you may want to cover in this interview include what concerns they have, how these issues have been addressed and potential solutions to the issues raised. Get as much detail as you can to these questions.

When writing your speech, use some of the examples you've culled from these interviews. This will help make a big impact in your speech. For example, to emphasize a point, you might say, "As a matter a fact, John Smith in your Dallas office told me...'' This is particularly important when you are

an outside speaker.

Not researching your audience can be disastrous. Kaye shared the story of a former client who was asked to give the commencement speech at a "special'' school. The speaker stressed the importance of "pushing the envelope'' and "bending the rules'' to get ahead. The special school was a juvenile correction facility.

Call to action. Another important element of a successful speech is asking the audience to do something specific. Somewhere in the body of your speech, generally toward the end, you will want to ask your audience what action it will take to make the vision happen.

Start strong. A powerful opener like a provocative question, startling statement, interesting fact or quote that captures attention is a good way to grab the audience from the outset.
