How Actor’s
Secrets Will Make You More Successful in Business
An Interview with Top Actress turned Business Coach
to the Super Successful
By Frances Parker
Aside
from being bright, beautiful, and contagiously vivacious, Ellen A. Kaye
is an executive coach and speaker extraordinaire. She guides Fortune 500
executives, celebrities, attorneys, and entrepreneurs. Before she became a coach, she was an
actress, model and spokesperson for many corporations. You may not recognize
her name, but everyone recognizes her face. When I sat down to interview Ellen, I hadn’t thought about the connection
between acting and the business world. But after speaking with her, I realize
how Ellen’s varied experiences in
the entertainment industry, have contributed to her super success coaching.
Think image really isn’t
important? Ellen begs to differ.
“Think about the characters you see on TV and in the movies. Hugh
amounts of money, time and creativity go into every aspect of the
character. From physical appearance to
mental and emotional attitude, actors know that every detail sends a very
important clue to the audience about the part they are playing.”
As a professionally trained
actress in Los Angeles
and New York,
Ellen appeared in more than 350
commercials and in many corporate videos.
Her job was to sell a company’s product or image. She now utilizes her
experiences to her clients’ advantage, identifying ways they can project
their own unique leadership image, discover what they really want, while
working within the parameters of their particular industry or corporate
culture.
Another skill Ellen learned while selling toothpaste, toilet
paper, and towels was how to deliver the message to the audience. “Work on
stage and TV, helped me polish my public speaking skills that are invaluable
to my business clients.” Some of the skills she mentioned include projecting
your voice, learning your lines, using congruent body language, and the
importance of connecting with your audience.
As a recognizable top
talent, Ellen learned other skills,
which may not seem applicable to businesses. However, an actress learns the
importance of looking the part, despite reality. “I show executives how to
project their message in those less than fabulous moments.”
Working for a major, international, upscale fashion designer, Ellen accessed the fashion industry’s secrets on
how to make fashion work. Which clothing is stylish and right for you, how to
buy within your budget, and how to determine what looks good. “I now help
clients look and feel in top form.”
As a television host for an
entertainment talk show, Ellen
learned valuable techniques she applies when coaching clients for media
appearances. “After coaching, my clients know how to control a media
interview. From what to say, to how
they look, clients learn to communicate their message persuasively and get
invited back.” A fun and fascinating technique Ellen
mentioned was the way actors and models know how to look their best. “Actors are in the public eye and people
are watching their every move. They smile for the camera and look fabulous in
their pictures. Why? Because they know how to make the camera love them.
These are skills I teach my clients.”
Ellen notes another skill she learned from her years in
the entertainment industry: How to
travel. “My job is to get to my
clients wherever they are. I don’t have time to waste worrying about if I
packed everything. Out of necessity I have created a great system for solving
this problem called the Perfect Packing Method, and my clients love it.”
Gauging from her impressive
list of clients and references, Ellen’s
methods certainly work wonders in the business world!
