Media Coach Ellen A. Kaye Coaches

Clients to appear on ABC TV’s “The View”

with Barbara Walters

Media and image coach, Ellen A. Kaye coaches another celebrity to TV stardom. Kaye was in New York to coach Larry James, celebrated author of Love Notes for Lovers for his appearance on the hot ABC television show, The View.

Ellen A, Kaye is a world class authority on excellent presentation and powerful leadership skills. Kaye is the author of the best selling book, Maximize Your Presentation Skills: How to Speak, Look and Act on Your Way to the Top. She is President and Founder of Perfect Presentation® a multi-facetted coaching and consulting firm headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The award winning show was hosted by veteran broadcaster Barbara Walters, Meredith Viera, Joy Behar and Star Jones. When asked how James, a celebrity in his own right, felt about Kaye’s coaching, he was all gratitude. “In preparation for my interview with Barbara Walters on ABC’s The View, Ellen’s expertise, both on and off the set, was a lifesaver. I can’t thank her enough.” Kaye coached James on media training, image and voice.

Researching Your Audience is Essential

“Before doing any kind of presentation” says Kaye, “whether on TV or in person, it is critical to do research on your audience.” In this particular case, Kaye probed the shows producers and author James about the demographics of their audience. (Please See Sidebar Below).

Kaye on Creating Your Most Powerful, Polished Image

Knowing the audience to appeal to, Kaye advised James of the perfect wardrobe to make him look authoritative but not intimidating. Since James’ complexion is pale and his hair is gray, Kaye advised him to wear a dark blue suit, a pink shirt with a red tie and matching pocket square.

Why? A dark blue suit commands respect and shows physical presence. A pink shirt because Kaye wanted James to appear strong but sensitive. Pink is the color of compassion. While it may be too feminine for a straight business man, James needed to “approachable.” And the tie? Red is a power color. The tie and pocket square are some of the few places a man can enjoy a little pizzazz in his usually conservative wardrobe.

What Went Wrong?

Although Kaye coached and directed James through a rehearsal prior to the show, once the cameras started rolling , the reality of a “live broadcast” to millions of viewers set in.

No doubt, the situation is overwhelming, In this case, James was so nervous, his throat closed down. His became almost inaudible. He did not “cheat” enough toward camera. (“Cheating” means moving your head or body unnaturally toward the camera, instead of looking directly into someone’s eyes as you would in real life.) James also inadvertently missed a great lead-in to reference his website and book. Many more opportunities were lost, unwittingly neglected.

More Critical Reasons to Have Kaye On-the-Set

Lucky for Kaye and James. Queen Latifah, the special guest scheduled to appear right after the break, failed to appear. This gave Kaye a golden opportunity to give James some on-the-set coaching, which everyone, even professional actors, sorely need.

Kaye was full of solid suggestions to make James look and sound more professional.

“Look at Barbara but speaks to the back of the house. Project your voice. Open your mouth wide when you speak. Stop mumbling. The audience can’t hear or understand you. ‘Cheat’ more. Don't worry. It never feels natural but, who cares? It looks great on camera. Sit up straighter. Sit on the back hemline of your suit jacket so it doesn’t ride up and bunch at the neck.”

Everyone Gets Coaching

“There’s no question, even the most proficient actors have their hands full with a live interview” explains Coach Kaye. “That’s why they all get coaching. Yes, that’s right. These days, everyone gets personal coaching. It is fool-hardy to risk a career because you neglected Text Box: Kaye’s 10 Critical Questions to Ask about Your Audience

1.)	How many people are expected to be in the audience?
2.)	What is their age range?
3.)	Number of men, and number of woman, expected.
4.)	What are the top 3 “Hot” topics they need you to deal with?
5.)	What are some of the “Hot” buttons to avoid? For example: it’s generally a good idea to avoid topics like abortion, politics and sex. Unless, of course, like James, you are a relationship consultant, who would still do well to avoid the first tow topics.
6.)	What are their top 3 biggest “problems” or challenges that you can help with?
7.)	What are the unspoken issues that are stressing the audience?
8.)	How can you solve their problem? For example, James is an expert relationship coach. He has many tried and true ideas that have helped people across the country. as well as several books on the subject.
9.)	What do you offer that will ease their pain? For example, James answered several universal relationship questions.
10.)	What can you leave them with to continue working on their issues? For example, James provided everyone in the audience with a copy of his book LoveNotes for Lovers. He also gave out his email address for those in the “live” audience and viewers at home who might like some more information.
to get some coaching.”
